Lord Peter Hendy, Minister of State for Rail, speaking at Oxford Parkway about funding approval for Cowley Branch Line

Great news that – after 60 years of operation for freight only – the Cowley Branch Line in Oxford will be reopened for passengers! The government has pledged £120m in funding, unlocking critical space for research and jobs, and also finally connecting places on the margins of the city with high quality public transport. 5th Studio have been working with a dynamic team at Oxford City Council, Oxfordshire County Council and Network Rail to help build the case for reopening the line and realise better, comprehensive spatial outcomes for Oxford. Our commission - alongside rail specialists SLC, Transition by Design Oxford and Maddison Graphics - has developed designs for the areas around the two new stations at Cowley and Littlemore, comprising the stations themselves and the immediate environs, plus a series of wider walking and cycling connections, designed to ensure that the stations connect well with both new and emerging neighbourhoods and an important knowledge quarter emerging across the south of Oxford. We have established the broad framework for the how development, regeneration and connectivity could be coordinated across the wider area, and across multiple landowners and stakeholders, linked to Network Rail’s development of the overall line reopening proposals, costings and business case. Oxford City Council leader Susan Brown said: "The Cowley Branch Line is the single most important piece of infrastructure for connecting local communities and businesses in south and east Oxford. It will give access to more amenities and jobs, help to cut congestion, meet our climate targets, and unlock new homes and jobs." The rail minister, Lord Hendy, and Chief Secretary to the Treasury, James Murray, formally announced the funding in Oxford.  The project is part of a growing portfolio of projects in the practice, optimising infrastructure investment and ensuring that it is well-integrated into urban fabric, including East West Rail, Stratford Station, Waterloo Station, and the station quarters at Derby and Chester.
